Uh... in other news...
Dec. 13th, 2007 11:18 amThis is various shades of DO NOT WANT:
NBC is Relaunching Knight Rider
I like Knight Rider on the principle that it's a watchable action series (if you like that sort of thing) from the 1980s with an AI and a British guy who are pretty awesome. I care little for the Hoff. The parts that haven't aged well are now unintentional hilarious - sorry guys who like the series and defend it, but Garth is the funniest thing ever. He has a moustache, a pimp cane, a truck and he's EVVVVIIIL! HA!
As for this new series, let's see...
KITT's, uh, not KITT. Not the same KITT, since the "Two Thousand" got upgraded to "Three Thousand", with a different voice and is now a Ford Mustang.
"Justin's character of Mike Traceur is the son of Michael Knight, but "I clearly don't know that right away,"" which answers the question of if Michael fathered illegitimate kids or not. I sense comedy gold right there. He's also a Iraq vet, updating the Vietnam war angle in the original.
"Deanna plays the daughter of Charles Graiman, the inventor of KITT" Charles, by the way, is played by the same guy who played Senator Kelly in the X-Men movies. This is a joke that only two people here are going to get, but LMAO! Does the Graiman conflict with Bonnie? I can't remember, but Deanna is basically the updated Bonnie role.
There doesn't appear to be a clear replacement for Devon, but there's an FBI agent who may or may not be covering that role.
This all strikes me as having the potential for very large amounts of unintentional comedy. What depresses me, though, is while NBC is looking for a primetime action series, this is just another remake. Comedy/action isn't mind blowing hard to create.
I suppose someone might bring up the new Battlestar Galactica series and how well that's doing, given that the originals were both Glen A. Larson series. Now, Knight Rider getting remixed like Battlestar did, as in completely reimagined with a clean start, would have been interesting. As goofy as the show is, there's some fairly dark material in the backstory. The pilot episode is quite interesting to watch through given when the show was released and what the content is; Michael gets his face blown off and Devon has an extremely twisted sense of humour, almost running Michael over at one point. Instead of that, we get something more alone the lines of a bad animated sequel - the adventures of the major character's kids! Note how they're the same, but bitter to follow in their parent's footsteps!
It's just not interesting.
Also: Why hello there, Equalizer DVDs. In terms of silly 1980s action series, that's one I've been wanting for some time.

Date: 2007-12-13 08:13 pm (UTC)I used to be that way, but over the years he started to grow on me. Still, aside from RCIII, he's my least favorite main on the show
Michael strikes me as the "odd man out" in the series. He's the normal guy tossed into this science fiction underground, but comes across as... a bit dull.
What's even worse, if poor Devon having to explain to Michael that the reason he and Garth share a face is because Wilton was a rich, fucked up, eccentric individual that couldn't cope with a son who didn't love him.
Wilton had ISSUES. It says a lot about Devon's character that he stuck around for as long as he did.
Traceur sounds like Michael must have had a liaison with a French chick.
The name made me think of "another" Trace... I've got nothing.
It's a good thing this is a new series, because if we had to deal with that in canon, it might make us approach poofdom.
With Devon still alive, everything is pretty much AUed.
If I remember right, it was Wilton that created KITT. I think, though, that for the purpose of this series, they're saying that this person invented a car based on KITT. It's hardly right to call anyone an inventor, if they're copying an idea.
Another article claimed that this new guy created KITT. I can't remember who got named as KITT's "creator", if it was really Wilton or someone Wilton hired. It's like saying who Nance's creator was in IPnS; you can't say that it was the Canadian Government in this AU, because the programmer was never named... yet. XP
No. No, she isn't. I can't cope with the idea that anyone could take Bonnie's role. It just won't compute.
I just meant that she's the Bonnie role to the new Michael role, not that she'd take Bonnie's place.
Galactica's not doing that well these days. They somehow managed to go from frakking awesomeness to unbelievable shitiness is less than a season. Amazing.
Sorta glad I didn't follow it, then.
I'll likely watch the new Knight Rider, just because it would give me something to look forward to, and something to bitch about. Right now, since all of my shows are on break or done for the year, I just don't know what to do with myself.
Might watch it for the lolz and parody material, myself.
