This is various shades of DO NOT WANT:

NBC is Relaunching Knight Rider

I like Knight Rider on the principle that it's a watchable action series (if you like that sort of thing) from the 1980s with an AI and a British guy who are pretty awesome. I care little for the Hoff. The parts that haven't aged well are now unintentional hilarious - sorry guys who like the series and defend it, but Garth is the funniest thing ever. He has a moustache, a pimp cane, a truck and he's EVVVVIIIL! HA!

As for this new series, let's see...

KITT's, uh, not KITT. Not the same KITT, since the "Two Thousand" got upgraded to "Three Thousand", with a different voice and is now a Ford Mustang.

"Justin's character of Mike Traceur is the son of Michael Knight, but "I clearly don't know that right away,"" which answers the question of if Michael fathered illegitimate kids or not. I sense comedy gold right there. He's also a Iraq vet, updating the Vietnam war angle in the original.

"Deanna plays the daughter of Charles Graiman, the inventor of KITT" Charles, by the way, is played by the same guy who played Senator Kelly in the X-Men movies. This is a joke that only two people here are going to get, but LMAO! Does the Graiman conflict with Bonnie? I can't remember, but Deanna is basically the updated Bonnie role.

There doesn't appear to be a clear replacement for Devon, but there's an FBI agent who may or may not be covering that role.

This all strikes me as having the potential for very large amounts of unintentional comedy. What depresses me, though, is while NBC is looking for a primetime action series, this is just another remake. Comedy/action isn't mind blowing hard to create.

I suppose someone might bring up the new Battlestar Galactica series and how well that's doing, given that the originals were both Glen A. Larson series. Now, Knight Rider getting remixed like Battlestar did, as in completely reimagined with a clean start, would have been interesting. As goofy as the show is, there's some fairly dark material in the backstory. The pilot episode is quite interesting to watch through given when the show was released and what the content is; Michael gets his face blown off and Devon has an extremely twisted sense of humour, almost running Michael over at one point. Instead of that, we get something more alone the lines of a bad animated sequel - the adventures of the major character's kids! Note how they're the same, but bitter to follow in their parent's footsteps!

It's just not interesting.

Also: Why hello there, Equalizer DVDs. In terms of silly 1980s action series, that's one I've been wanting for some time.

I care little for the Hoff.

I used to be that way, but over the years he started to grow on me. Still, aside from RCIII, he's my least favorite main on the show.

I agree, completely, even if I do like the series and defend it. Garth was so out there. What's even worse, if poor Devon having to explain to Michael that the reason he and Garth share a face is because Wilton was a rich, fucked up, eccentric individual that couldn't cope with a son who didn't love him.

Poor Devon.

I didn't really read, read the article. I skimmed it and looked at the pictures. My first thought was that the kid isn't bad looking. And, I guess the girl isn't bad looking. Of course, in the 80's, the Hoff and Patricia McPherson were good looking. Patricia McPherson's still good looking, from what I've seen.

Anyway, I'm so easily sidetracked. ::puts the train back on the proper track:: Traceur sounds like Michael must have had a liaison with a French chick.

This is a joke that only two people here are going to get, but LMAO!

It's a good thing this is a new series, because if we had to deal with that in canon, it might make us approach poofdom.

Does the Graiman conflict with Bonnie?

If I remember right, it was Wilton that created KITT. I think, though, that for the purpose of this series, they're saying that this person invented a car based on KITT. It's hardly right to call anyone an inventor, if they're copying an idea.

I can't remember, but Deanna is basically the updated Bonnie role.

No. No, she isn't. I can't cope with the idea that anyone could take Bonnie's role. It just won't compute.

I suppose someone might bring up the new Battlestar Galactica series and how well that's doing, given that the originals were both Glen A. Larson series.

Galactica's not doing that well these days. They somehow managed to go from frakking awesomeness to unbelievable shitiness is less than a season. Amazing.

I have a feeling this new Knight Rider series will go a lot like the Bionic Woman. I actually watched the first three or so episodes of Bionic Woman before totally losing interest. Even Katee Sackoff as an evil robot woman couldn't keep me coming back (which might be some amazing coincidence if Starbuck turns out to be a Cylon.)

I'll likely watch the new Knight Rider, just because it would give me something to look forward to, and something to bitch about. Right now, since all of my shows are on break or done for the year, I just don't know what to do with myself.

So, yeah. Sorry for the novel-length comment. At least you'll have something to read, right?

AHHH! LJ ate my reply!

Michael strikes me as the "odd man out" in the series. He's the normal guy tossed into this science fiction underground, but comes across as... a bit dull.

What's even worse, if poor Devon having to explain to Michael that the reason he and Garth share a face is because Wilton was a rich, fucked up, eccentric individual that couldn't cope with a son who didn't love him.

Wilton had ISSUES. It says a lot about Devon's character that he stuck around for as long as he did.

Traceur sounds like Michael must have had a liaison with a French chick.

The name made me think of "another" Trace... I've got nothing.

It's a good thing this is a new series, because if we had to deal with that in canon, it might make us approach poofdom.

With Devon still alive, everything is pretty much AUed.

If I remember right, it was Wilton that created KITT. I think, though, that for the purpose of this series, they're saying that this person invented a car based on KITT. It's hardly right to call anyone an inventor, if they're copying an idea.

Another article claimed that this new guy created KITT. I can't remember who got named as KITT's "creator", if it was really Wilton or someone Wilton hired. It's like saying who Nance's creator was in IPnS; you can't say that it was the Canadian Government in this AU, because the programmer was never named... yet. XP

No. No, she isn't. I can't cope with the idea that anyone could take Bonnie's role. It just won't compute.

I just meant that she's the Bonnie role to the new Michael role, not that she'd take Bonnie's place.

Galactica's not doing that well these days. They somehow managed to go from frakking awesomeness to unbelievable shitiness is less than a season. Amazing.

Sorta glad I didn't follow it, then.

I'll likely watch the new Knight Rider, just because it would give me something to look forward to, and something to bitch about. Right now, since all of my shows are on break or done for the year, I just don't know what to do with myself.

Might watch it for the lolz and parody material, myself.

Do not want.

I see this going the way of the 'reimagined' Star Trek movie they're working on: Complete and total DISASTER. It reeks of bad. I know people say, "Give it a chance!" but given the history of J.J. Abrahms and the recent history of Trek? It's gonna be awful.

And so will this one.

Just... no. Do not want.

I'm NOT going to "Give it a chance" here. If I watch it, it'll be to see how awful (and therefore funny) it is.

"Remaking" in this way seems like a cheap way out. The only series that I'd ever want to see relauched is Prisoners of Gravity, because so much of that series is based on current-at-the-time media that it would force itself to move on and not cling to old ideas...

Unless we get an epic fail and Commander Rick's son decides to follow in his father's footsteps. "Oh, I somehow managed to crash into ANOTHER misplaced communications satillite. What are the odds?"

Thanks for the catch!

HA! I was going to end that post with "By the way, Universal, where's my damn Equalizer DVDs?" but I did a Google search and found IT'S FINALLY COMING OUT ON DVD!

I loved the Equalizer. I have a massive soft spot for the vigilante series of the 1980s like Knight Rider, The A-Team, Equalizer, etc. Equalizer has a particular spot on its own, because I started watching it back when it was on A&E when I was going through a rough period back in middle school. I only got to watch it when I was home sick, though. :(

That opening is still awesome.
