Across the creek from the building I grew up in until I was 4 or so, there was a small piece of land with an old-style fast food joint (Arnold's Drive-In), a donut shop (don't remember the original name, but it was a Country Style and a Coffee Time at some point) and an ice cream store.

Yeah, the donut and ice cream places are now a CONDO SHOWROOM. Nothing is sacred anymore.

The Toronto real estate market is so wacked. Business is slowing down and yet the housing market is still out of control. [livejournal.com profile] slwatson mentioned the housing prices where she is and I nearly passed out. I have $1500 saved for a bachelor apartment and I'm worried that it won't be enough for something clean, critter free and near the TTC. :(

$1500 per month? Or is that first month AND last month, added together?

Yeah, it's for first and last. So, I'm aiming for $750... I hope.

It may go to $800 or above, and I'm not looking at the downtown core. More to the west.

Our Apartment in Toronto at St. Joseph and Bay st. (Just south of Bloor) was a Bachelor and probably one of the nicest buildings we lived in was $850 a month + Hydro. It was probably built in the 40s or 30s and had a lot of character. It also had its own kitchen which is rare. At the opposite end was a box that was disgusting and in a bad neighbourhood (Jameison and Dupot) which costed $650 (First apartment we looked at, never lived there).

West or East doesn't really matter. Important thing is to be within walking distance (or short bus ride) to either Queen or anywhere along the bloor line. Areas I think that are neat include High Park, Beach, Humber Bay area (props to the best College Campus in the GTA), Hoggs Hollow and the Annex/Bloordale.

As you can see most young people not living at home in Toronto roomed with someone.

Annex?! Are you insane? The Bench is apparently crazy too. It's an arm and a leg to move there now. Humber Bay is nice, as is a lot of the lakeshore (I lived in Long Branch for the first few years of my live), but it's almost too out of the way.

I have two leads. One is High Park near Junction, which is where my friend lives. Bachelor is $709, with hydro. Other is... either Riverdale or Leslieville. It's a co-worker's apartment but he's looking for someone to take it because he intends to move up to Davisville. Might be a one bedroom, need to ask about the price.

Riverdale and Leslieville are all part and parcel of the beach as far as I'm concerned. The who area is nice and its between Queen and Danforth which means you'll either have street car or a subway to get you to the Yonge Line. High Park is also a good spot because you'll be near Bloor. A little longer of a trip. Now you need to become artsy fartsy, check out the scene and such. Grab a fat free mochacachalatte, check out the new dance ensemble your room mate preforms in and pick up that $500 hand bag at Holt Refrew. Then will you truly be a Torontonian.

Ugh. I ranted about hand bags at lunch today. WHAT'S THE POINT OF THEM?!!

The High Park one is 30 minutes from front of the building to work. I timed that one. It's longer, but the subway is more dependable than the streetcar.
