INTERVIEW!
Aug. 28th, 2007 11:28 amMe making an idiot of myself:
http://thisweekingeek.net/node/78
Also includes an interview with someone named Rick... something. I forget.
AND YES I KNOW THAT THE SITE PROMOTION SUCKED. That is why I'm getting a domain for that thing.
Not sure what was kept in or not and I can't tell right now because I'm at the office, don't have headphones and there's no way I'm playing it for my boss. He's old school sports radio and would probably call out all of my flaws. :)

Date: 2007-09-04 06:13 pm (UTC)There were several places during the interview -- if we're honest, let's call them lulls -- where Rick's drawn canter was clearly signalling for any of you to interrupt his monologue, hoping to balance the flow of the conversation... Yet no one did, so he carried on too long by his lonesome to save the show from stumbling to moments of dead air. You could have jumped in to ask about some of his favorite episodes or guests, or springboarded such replies by naming some of your own favorites.
It seemed the hosts bailed from the PoG topic entirely too soon, but since no one was asking anything.... (That was your cue to elbow in.) Didn't you write down any crib sheet questions in preparation, like they do on latenight talk shows?
Um... why were those guys constantly resorting to the 'phony radio host laugh'? It was especially inappropriate in response to Rick's describing the Middle Age slaughter of peasants... "hohoo... Hilarious!" ... o_O
From that chuckling nonsense, the two hosts come across as obnoxious web fanboys nursing an inflated self-image. If conducting an interview, it's fine to talk about yourself only insofar as leading into a relevant question, but instead these guys often became grating spotlight hogs, putting the guest in an awkward spot by publicly requesting special favors.
"Put us in History Bites!" (said Beavis.)
"hohoho... Sweet!" (said Butthead.)
Rick turned depressing when delivering his impassioned history lesson about people dying from toothaches, and referencing Michael Vick's dogfighting incident... L__L
The other girl said nothing memorable (did she ask anything at all?) but she'd occasionally chime in with throwaway fluff to remind us that she hadn't altogether expired.
It seemed you were caught off guard at the end with the question about your fansite but you handled it well in directing ppl to google since it wouldn't have been practical to dictate a lengthy URL.
So... yeah. You should have shoved those geeks aside and participated more. :-)

Date: 2007-09-04 07:31 pm (UTC)The issue is that we were thinking on different wavelengths. They wanted to cover the basics and get on with it. Meanwhile, I had questions that went beyond this and were the result of years of Signal Loss work. I did manage to talk to Rick about some more detailed things after the show (thus the discussion about the masters I mentioned). There was also the matter of time - Rick first said only 30 minutes, but stayed for 45 or so.
There we plans for crib notes to be dicussed together, but weren't due problems that were beyond everyone's control and related to a power outage. So, the fact that the hosts wanted to roll as low as they did came as a surprise. I regret that the interview went the way it did and that I didn't shoved them aside more, but it was hard to get a word in with those two, as you can imagine.
The Michael Vick thing hit too close to home and there wasn't much I could say after that. We had to follow the coverage closely for work and it's just plain upsetting. I didn't speak up then because I knew it would by spotlight hogging - "Well, at my work... - and the hogging that happened earlier left my uncomfortable.
I am not a highly cultured geek by any means. You've seen my blog - I waste my time watching TV shows like Mystery Science Theater, playing World of Warcraft and Phoenix Wright or doing both at the same time. After hanging around Fan Expo with these guys, though, I don't think we mesh that well and I haven't heard back about anything since. There was an offer to help out discussing anime and I said I could help out, but I mentioned that my interest in anime is mostly driven not by "It's anime! OMG!" but "This is a form of media from a different culture that often isn't that special, much like our own media, but there are some gems of nice storytelling and artistry that are worth checking out." This opinion isn't very popular. What were they expecting? A yaoi fangirl?
I really want to do something more... intellectual online. At the moment, that means focusing more on Signal Loss and maybe reviewing some audiobooks for sffaudio.com.
