FUNimation is a superhero among anime distributors
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-07-03/funimation-agrees-to-distribute-select-geneon-titleshttp://www.animenewsnetwork.com/press-release/2008-07-03/funimation-entertainment-and-geneon-entertainment-sign-exclusive-distribution-agreement-for-north-americaThere's been rumours that Geneon was in talks with "a company" but nobody on the inside was offering infomation up until now. Turns out that it went a little messy and then FUNimation won out.
The partnership only seems to apply to a select handful of titles and most of the titles appear to be ones that either were left unfinished when Geneon pulled out of the market or had just finished, leaving the last volume with a tiny print run. The big deal?
The agreement includes When They Cry/Higurashi! I'm more or less ecstatic at this news. The Geneon run ended at the end of the "mess around with your head" arcs, leaving the more interesting and plot heavy arcs unreleased. Sadly, the later arcs were what sold me on the show.
The downside here is that Higurashi might get released as a box, because it's partly incomplete. I own the volumes from the Geneon run, so I'll be rebuying a couple of discs. :( Plus, it's not clear if the second season is included. I HOPE it is. The first season ends kinda on a high note, redeeming several characters but then you discover that there's something bigger and more sinister going on and... END OF EPISODE.
Sooo, I'm hoping to see the end of the show on DVD, just so I have it all, but at this point I'd be happy with just seeing the first season finished.
