Okay, I'm enjoying Ian Thomas music too much how my own darn good. Pyat put Pilot on a mix CD he gave me and I have that song stuck in my head now.

And you know, it doesn't help that there's that connection to Red Green (Ho' crap, it's Dougie singing!) and SCTV there (this song was featured in the episode of that show), but it does make it A LOT funnier.

I grew up on Ian Thomas radio hits. I swear, hit greatest hits compilation is like the soundtrack of my youth. I had no idea he wrote so many songs I practically knew by heart. Amazing, and a really nice guy, too. Met him in a music store years ago.

He's got a very "It's the 1970s and it's CANADA!" sound, for reasons I can't place or quite remember. I'm guessing I heard him as a kid.

I'm very musically dumb, but the sound is very much of that era, but what makes it stand out is the lyrics. In Pilot, for example, the tone of the music is mellow and upbeat to my ears, but the lyrics are extremely dark and surreal. It reminds me A LOT of Silver Rainbow, which is one of my favourite Genesis songs.

Ian Thomas as a composer is clever and tasteful, but I agree with you that his lyrics are actually the strongest feature of his songs. He might not be Bob Dylan, but he's an exceptional wordsmith, and his ability to put such strong and intelligent messages into the confines of well-crafted 3-5 minute pop songs shows more talent than many songwriters who have sold more than he has. Plus, he's stayed pretty true to his roots. He grew up in Stoney Creek, and lives somewhere around Dundas (or is that vice versa?). You might also like some of the stuff he's done since his heyday, though he's mostly been playing in supergroups with fellow veterans of the Canadian music scene.
