I HATE getting my hair cut!
Dec. 3rd, 2008 01:40 pmNow, more about my hair then you'd ever want to know...
I have strange hair. It's extremely thick, brown-red-something hair that gets out of control easily. It's painfully wavey and looks like crap when it goes past my shoulders. So, since grade 12, I've had it cut short, in something that can best be described as a spunky cross between a pixie cut and guy's cut that was very wash and go. While this might sound strange... remember this is me we're talking about. The cut was originally designed by someone who's known me for years. Thus, it was a cut designed for my personality. I was rather attached to it. Most of my cuts are based on that, but I trust her enough to mess around with it.
Now, here's one part of the problem - I don't live in Hamilton anymore and I rarely go back. I've been letting it grow out until I could get back in, but finally I got sick of the problem and needed it cut off NOW. Being that I live in Toronto, I got a first taste of what a woman's cut in the city is like. And how much one costs.
I finally managed to get up the nerve to go get my haircut at someone other than Gale, who was my go-to lady for hair. I went to a salon and quickly discovered that the chick wasn't a good listener. Also, it seems that many salons like to fall back on what's "in" at the moment. I told her that I wanted to keep roughly the same style, but informed her that it had grown out to the point where it was hard to figure out what the style originally was. She did her best and I'll give her that. However.
- She spent more time styling than cutting, which is bullshit because the style is going to wash out after the first shower.
- She didn't cut my bangs short enough, despite me asking for it repeatly.
- She didn't really want to cut my hair too short, but I'd blame that as being unfixable and it was her first time with me
- The result was more of a bob than my usual style.
And all these are forgivable. Except for one thing.
I HAD TO PAY $67 FOR THE HAIRCUT.
Granted, this was with tip. The main reason I tipped her was that she took the time to go and thin out the hair, which means that she knew enough that it was extreme thick and needed to be thinned. BUT.
SIXTY-SEVEN DOLLARS?!
What kind of bullshit is that? A men's cut there was for $35, without tip. And don't give me "You're a woman and your hair needs to be styled more." If you do, you don't know me. I like my hair short and scruffy. You know, LIKE A GUY'S CUT. Why is a price difference that large allowed to exist? That's more than my food budget for a week. And it's not like my hair was long to begin with. It wasn't even past my shoulders.
