I think I've won against the fruit flies in my apartment. Haven't seen one all day. I didn't mean for them to be an issue, but this was a combo of cooking with fresh fruits and veggies, the summer heat and that I don't generate much trash, so I only take the trash out once every two weeks or so. So, they caught up with me. They're mostly cleaned out now.

The response from yesterday's misadventure has been great! I was worried that people would get the wrong idea, but that doesn't seem to be the case. On the other hand, I was annoyed to discover that she decided to restore my "Author" page after I cleared the content as an admin. BEFORE this happened. Thankfully, all it has listed is the amount of time I've been online and a link to my LJ. Add me to the list of people frustrated by her complete arrogance when it comes to other people's information.

And since wank isn't wank without recipes, here's one for a basic but taste casserole. I generally half the recipe and then box up half for lunch the next day. It reheats well. I usually use Fontina cheese instead of Gorgonzola.

We haven't had fruit flies in a quantity that might qualify as an infestation, but once or twice they've reached annoying levels. We dealt with it successfully by simply isolating the fruit. What was ripe, we ate or processed into something that went into the fridge. What wasn't ripe went into closed containers of one kind or another, and we tried hard to remember to keep checking on them, to use before they went all the way to spoilage. And yes, we took out the trash promptly.

Cut off from their food supply, they don't last long.

Oh: and wash the fruit basket thoroughly to get rid of eggs.

It wasn't the fruit basket that was the problem, but my trash can. I'm scared of apartment bugs (I have a known allergy to cockroaches) and my apartment is amazingly warm and dry, so everything goes into the fridge. Add to this that I don't produce much trash, because I recycle everything and Toronto doesn't have a green bin program for apartments, so all food waste goes into the trash.

The solution is to be more prompt about getting the trash out. I've been doing it daily since the battle started. I figured that they can't live without food and they can't breed without nesting material. Remove the two and you remove the fruit flies.
