Steff showed me this:

I went a little nuts.

[17:07] CommanderTeddog: I've poked at some of the essay batshit. I haven't dared touch the fic yet.
[17:10] CommanderTeddog: Learn how many of your favorite books and TV shows are actually Intimate Adventure.

... Let's see if it works for PoG. HA!
[17:12] CommanderTeddog: In the "Action" story, where characters are developed in depth (Gordon R. Dickson's novels are good examples) they don't have any meaningful Relationships with other characters.

Wait. WHAT?
[17:12] hglowe: ::groans::
[17:12] CommanderTeddog: This essay is GOLD.
[17:13] hglowe: Meta-comment away. It needs picked apart.
[17:13] CommanderTeddog: "Adventure" on the other hand is a genre I love to this day. In an "Adventure" story the main character is jolted out of his/her everyday life and thrown into a Situation where everything is different and strange, and survival depends on wits, will, guts, and -- AND! -- on the ability to establish and maintain long-term Relationships with others in the story.

By the end of an Adventure, the main character has to be returned to a comfortable life with healthy Relationships anchoring him to his reality.

[17:13] CommanderTeddog: This person has never seen an Indy film.
[17:14] hglowe: The random capitalization... bluuugh!
[17:15] CommanderTeddog: Because s/he claims that in an adventure story:

You don't attain a Healthy Relationship with others by conquering them, by defeating them, by vanquishing them, by annihilating them, by triumphing over them. Such actions prevent healthy relationships from forming.

What kind of books is s/he READING?
[17:16] hglowe: Good question!
[17:16] hglowe: What capitalization rules is she going by?
[17:17] CommanderTeddog: Torgo's, I think.

Forever Knight was a wonderful Intimate Adventure (Nick/Natalie).

I call bullshit. I watched Forever Knight. People were defeated there.
[17:17] CommanderTeddog: I WatCH iNTimaTE AdVENtuRES WhilE tHe MaSTer Is AwAy.
[17:17] hglowe: LMAO!!!!
[17:19] CommanderTeddog: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel both have Intimate Adventure -- though the obvious point is the combat scenes, the story-arc is about how relationships change people.

I think she just disproved her point.
[17:21] CommanderTeddog: And you will notice all these prominent examples have one thing in common -- a vocal and enthusiastically creative following - pouring out stories, artwork, songs, conventions, jewelry, fellowship, and forming life-long friendships.

.... Um. Then explain the A-Team fandom. Also - jewelry?!?

[17:21] CommanderTeddog: Oh man, THERE'S MORE. I should be working... but can't.... look... away...
[17:21] hglowe: LMAO!
