1. Reply to this post, and I will pick four of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon squee!

Of course, I should warn that Steff picked one of the WORST ICONS EVER to explain. You've been warned.

Nothing special here. It's a icon of Dodger from the movie Oliver and Company. I loved Dodger as a kid - one of the plushies I still have from my childhood is one of Dodger from 1989 and I can tell you EXACTLY where I got it - from the Centorium store in Epcot! I remember dragging him through the Living Seas.

I guess Oliver and Company, while just being a movie I really likde as a kid, set the standard for how I operate in fandom. I saw the film once in 1988 and had to wait until the 1996 rerelease to see it again. With many of my fandoms, there's a huge downtime between first seeing it and then finding it again. Now that I think about, I still don't have the film on DVD. It's not an amazingly good movie, but I liked it and it's got songs by Billy Joel and Huey Lewis, so you can't go wrong in the cheese department.

The image is lifted from a Warcraft-based comic called "Manic Graffiti". The comic strip was parodying how silly the endgame rep grinds are now. What was originally refered here was the Netherwing rep grind and how you discover that a couple of major canon characters who were assumed dead are actually alive. Because Burning Crusade (The "BC") is based closely on events from Warcraft II and some of III, this happens A LOT.

I use this for a lot of WoW releated posts, mostly as a reference that I know what the plot in World of Warcraft is awful. However, it's like playing through a b-movie or an episode of Mystery Science Theater and therefore mildly amusing.

Bet you've never seen that one. There's a good reason for that. Allow me to explain why this icon even exists...

Several years ago, Steff was on a Mystery Science Theater 3000 kick and made an icon using a scene from the season 5-6 Mike opening. Not just ANY scene, mind you, but the one where Mike is tied up and gagged while the bots shake their heads. I don't think this is ever explained in MST3K canon, but out of context it can be taken COMPLETELY THE WRONG WAY.

Here's the icon in question. Due to the nature of the image, it earned the nickname "The Bondage!Mike Icon". You better darn believe that I never let Steff live that down.

Skip forward to this past January. I got a copy of the Prisoners of Gravity episode "Robots and AI" in and I screencaped a couple of scenes from the episode. One that wasn't posted publicly was one named 0_0.jpg, which was a cap of the scene where Rick gets tangled up in some cables during a fight with Nance. Normally, this wouldn't be too bad, but that out of context and with the expression on Rick's face? Yeah, I pretty much had to eat the Bondage!Mike thing.

To paraphrase Steff: "At least Mike looked concerned".

Now, I normally don't use that icon in public. It's used in disucssions of fandom where things either are out of control or have the potential to.

I believe that the original image came from 4chan. There's two versions: Picard facepalming and Picard facepalming with the kitty in front. These were posted on a "Tuesday Morning Server Downtime" thread over at [livejournal.com profile] worldofwarcraft. The normal Picard one? That was funny, but the cat one KILLS me. It's so random. I keep this icon for discussions of stupidity, but since I've helped Steff with her little mirror universe project, it doubles as a GREAT Star Trek icon.

Quiet, you! At least Bondage!Mike started this road to ruin.

And what a fun and exciting road to ruin it's been so far!
