The beauty of the ONOW timeline is that other than name dropping about the current state of the world and technology, it could be set anywhere from recent times to the distant future. It's very much in the spirit of what ST: TOS is to many scifi geeks; a story that uses a science fiction backdrop to relate stories and themes that directly apply to the audience.
That's why I wrote that timeline the way I did, really. It's all a story about humanity, and people, and families. The tech (even writing an engineer and a biochemist) is really just part of the background. And I'm glad it comes across that way, too.
