Do not view the final episode of School Days. I haven't seen the rest of the show, although I've been told it's a rather uninspiring series based on a dating sim game. We all know how those turn out...

There be spoilers. I'm not burying them for such a silly show. Last warning.

The game was infamous because when you screwed up, you got one of three bad endings. We're not talking "The boy doesn't get the girl". They're more akin to something from a horror movie. Despite that there are over a dozen "good" endings, guess which ones got adapted for the anime?

The resulting reaction is nothing short of a mix of terrifying and fascinating. I watched the ending, for the record, and found it to be akin the nature of a Shakespearean tragedy but it misses the mark in that the characters are hard to sympathize with. There's no active search for redemption, just a bunch of nasty people that eventually all go insane. I think the only remarkable comment is that despite the soap opera-ish actions of the main cast, we witness that life, for the minor characters, continues on as normal.

I fail to see how this is "The greatest anime ending of all time", a label being tossed around by some fans. One has to wonder if they were asleep in class. It may be unique for an anime series of late to end in this fashion, but it's certainly not a unique ending for literature on a whole. Kill-Them-All endings aren't a stranger to anime, either. All that School Days really brings to the table is pushing gore to a new level. This isn't so much high lit more than grindhouse horror. Come on! Are we supposed to take this as serious television?
