And now a stupid story about... randomness.

I've been collecting DVDs of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. While the storytelling does not reach the skill and craftsmanship of some of my favorite pieces of sci-fi/fantasy (the Teddog is a Bradbury fan... :( ), it sometimes shares some of the same spirit. It's kinda hard to explain without seeing it, but behind the J-Pop tunes, the Moe character design and the anime parodies, there is an cute and amusing storyline that manages to hold my attention for longer than ten minutes.

ANYWHO, I head up to pick up volume 3, which came out for reals yesterday, only to discover that the discs are $50 each. This is extremely strange, because that's the going price for the Limited Editions. The LEs for this series of overpriced for the content and I never bothered with them, so there's NO way I'm going to pick up a standard edition for the same price.

I'm a bit upset that I don't have the money for the DVD... until I spot a Limited Edition of volume 3. On a whim, I check the price. Oddly enough, it's the price for the standard edition.

First thought - "Okay... someone switched the stickers!" Except, the clerk scanned in the SE and it still came out to the price of the standard. We checked the standard and it scanned for $50. Now, he knew how much this LE was worth (which is why we checked the standard), but because the error wasn't because of him or I, but with a distributor error, we couldn't do anything. He had to charge me the price that was on the computers.

"So," the clerk said to me, "It looks like you're beaten the system. Congrats on scoring a dirt cheap Limited Edition".

And that is the story of my big volume 3 set. :D

And no, the LE still isn't worth the $50. In the big box, there was an iron-on transfer of the SOS logo, a really funny pencil board with some fanservice for the guys on one side and some for the ladies on the other, a printed pillow case that neither my mother nor my teenaged brother are ever going to see, the first character single and a 2-DVD set with the watercolour cover. I'm not too fond of the LE covers (the eyes are CREEPY), but it's Yuki this time, so I can't really complain.
