Because I have some spare time at the moment...

This thought had occured to me because of the fallout from the new World of Warcraft add on and how the storyline was going to continue on. I'm one of those dorks that plays that game for the plot. Look, it has streampunk in it and my willpower is only so strong.

However, the debate right now can be summed up simply:
Should characters be killed off and, if they are, how should it be handled?

Now, WHY this is suddenly a huge problem is beyond me, especially in the context of this canon. The question is... why now all of the whining? Many characters have died in this series and other series. Not only minor ones, but the major protagonists. Like comic books characters, some have come back, but a great many are still dead.

This first came to a head when the plot in this canon suddenly included the death of a major anti-hero who, at some point, got his own little fan squad; one that was greatly pissed off that their favorite character was now, in fact, dead to canon. However, the death was plotted out in an interesting manner and never really bothered me for this reason. The character had rejected the idea that he had lost almost everything, choosing to live in his own little world while not noticing that the real world was collapsing in on itself. Eventually, reality bit him in the butt and he paid for it.

And lo, the fans were offended, because apparently, "great characters can't die!"

Which, as we all know, is a load of bull.

However, maybe I haven't been around enough insane fans, but why do people get mad at a choice that isn't their own to make? Getting upset, that I can understand. Character death is a touchy matter, even to those of us who have dealt with death in the real world.

But to become so vicious seems like a waste of effort if the death is logically sound within the context of the storyline. That being, the author does have a point and it's not death for the sake of thinning out the cast, like horror movie deaths.

/random thoughts of stupidity.

Looking back, this makes a surprising amount of sense.
