teddogI was going to post another Lunch Time Thoughts On Fandom, but then I saw this and went "OMG! More Warcraft wank!" Human stupidity, don't fail me now! Come on! Nerf Kara into the next Scholo while you're at it!
Actually! I do have time for a small fandom rant.
Alright. On the topic of pairing and age. You will never, ever see a more hypocritical bunch than 'Shippers.
People driven by shipping and only shipping scare the snot out of me. It just seems so hollow compare to the rest of fandom, which is admittedly not a very deep place to begin with. We're talking people who will have mental breakdowns if someone mentions their "pairing" and suggests that it doesn't matter who "tops". For some complex reason, the couple has to be EXACTLY how they imagine it.
It gets more asinine than that.
It's hard to point out an exact cause for what I'm going to describe, but I have a hunch that it came originally out of an anime fandom or some sort of domestic kid's fandom. The reasoning being that you need a set up with a major underaged character and a major adult character and these locations are exactly where you're going to find it.
Any complex, mutual, romantic relationship with a minor is a massive squick for me. The first thought in my mind is "Wait for the brat to be 18!". But, alas, this seems to be the "in" thing, given that
My PROBLEM with it is the broken logic that comes with it. If you want to pair a 16 year old with a 30 year old and pretend it's heaven's gift to literature, go right ahead. Just don't shove it in my face repeatedly (this is sadly easier said than done). BUT! If you going to do that and yet vocially complain that a 19 year old and 26 year old as a couple is too "pedo" for your taste, you need to be smacked on the upside of the head.
Oh, what's the phrase they like to use? "Don't like it, don't read"? Yeah, that goes both ways.
