Oct. 31st, 2006 07:44 amHappy Halloween, everybody!
I was planning on taking the younger sibs Trick or Treating tonight, but I'm stuck on candy duty instead.
Short version: My right foot is out of commission for the next ten or so days. Boooooooo!
Sometime over the weekend, my right big toe got infected. My guess is that it was because my toenail clipper slipped and I cut into the nailbed. I figured leave it for a few days and it'll be fine.
On Sunday night, it started acting up. Major waves of pain and throbbing that were enough to make me claw at my sheets and chew on clean socks to prevent myself from screaming. I tried all sorts of hopeful cures, like soaking in water with epsom salts, placing heat on it, putting a tight sock on, sleeping in an sitting position, placing my foot on the floor, placing a bandaid on where the cut was, etc, etc. Nothing helped and my constant running around made it so my mom got next to no sleep last night. She did better than me, since I got only an hour of broken up sleep. That only happened because I found some strong painkillers at one point.
I didn't know why this happened and my mother and I guessed that I might have just bumped my toe badly and bruised or sprained it. The pain was so bad at one point that the rest of my foot had a pain freakout. The top of my foot was feeling odd too, but this was later discovered to be from how I was walking.
The problem was that I promised Katie that I'd go to Toronto and help her do a school project. Katie is the type of person who can easliy get lost (but I still love you!). I, on the other hand, have a decent sense of direction. I'm too nice to tell Katie "I'm in a lot of pain, I can't come along", so I tagged along.
This would be a big mistake or a blessing, depending on how you see it.
My toe was in intense pain from the bus rides to the Go station and to Toronto and on our walk up Yonge street. As we entered the Bay at Queen and Yonge, it suddenly started to lift. It still hurt, mind you, but it hurt much less.
I was curious why this was, so I pulled off the bandiad.... and I swear, I have never seen so much pus in my life. It was everywhere! The pockets of the crap had risen to the surface and my toe was now a funky mix of white, red and purple.
Told you it was gross.
After a fight with my mother about if it was serious enough to go to the clinic or not (come on! It was really gross! That should have been a no-brainer), I eventually ended up waiting for 2 hours to see a poor doctor.
Doctor says that my walking more or less caused a major infection to start draining. All fine and good. He told the nurse to clean it and wrap it up. I felt bad for her, since it is a very gross looking think to deal with. We chatted and joke around until the doctor came back.
"You'll have to come back in 10 days," he said. "Then, if it's not clearing fast enough, we'll have to take it off."
Needless the say the nurse and I freaked out right away! Removing my toe?! I didn't think it was that bad!
The doctor looked at us like we were insane. "Uh, I didn't mean the toe. I meant the toenail."
And suddenly a massive wieght was lifted off of my shoulders.
Of course, cleaning this thing is no simple task. I had to pick up $40 worth of strong painkillers and antibiotics afterward. The painkillers are mostly for the evening; they're intended to knock me and the pain out at night so I can sleep. Normally I'd think twice about using such powerful drugs because relatives have had a history of problems with codeine, but IT TAKES THE PAIN AWAY. I am being extremely careful with it, though. That means only taking the pills in the evening. The pain is back right now and is fairly bad, but getting better. I don't know if it's the pills or what, but I've lost a lot of my appetite and just want to drink liquids by the gallon. The antibiotics might make me queasy, so I think that's the cause.
Why did this happen so close to Halloween? Darn you! I'm going to attempt my massive decorating job today, but sickness is going to stunt that somewhat. Hopefully I'll get a few good things done so I can take pics.
Anywho, I'm off to carve pumpkins! I was too sick last night to do it then and Lord Pumpkin and his minions are waiting to be gutted on the kitchen table.
Halloween = <3. I kinda wish I picked up that Vincent Price action figure at the Silver Snail yesterday afternoon. I've got a buttload of MST3K episodes to put me in the mood, though. Nothing says "Halloween" like Manos: The Hands of Fate. The Master approves greatly of this holiday.
