Von was discussing the huge gap in the cost of many books, especially graphic novels, a while back.

I'm pleased to announce that at least the Chapters/Indigo beast is FINALLY correcting prices. For example, the price on the back of many Marvel graphic novels is $32 Canadian, compared to $19.99 American. That's one heck of a markup. Thankfully, the books have been adjusted for the current exchange rate, knocking the price down to $24.

On top of that, all the Marvel books are 20% off this week, so you can get at least the old $32 ones at par with the American sticker price.

I also met my old high school art teacher at the bookstore today for what was probably the first time in 4 years. There was a rumor floating around that he had died of a heart attack, but I guess that was wrong.

Happy birthday to my mom, who just turned 47.

Nice to see Chapters/Indigo making those changes. It still needs to trickle down a bit more, but it's getting there and that's something.

Thing of comics and graphic novels: did you ever check out The Beguiling? I'm kinda curious to see what you think. :)

Oh, and of course, very happy birthday wishes to your Mom!

I saw The Beguiling's booth at Word on The Street. I didn't manage to get a close look because the crowds were annoying my friend and she wanted to leave (insert much grumbling here). From what I could see (which admittedly wasn't much) they had some out of print manga going for the cover price.

On a somewhat depressing note, the amount that Chapters/Indigo is lowering the prices seems to be dependant of the store itself. I picked up 1602/Marvel 1602 at the Eastgate Smithbooks repriced at $24 on Saturday (only paid $19.99, though), but then found it for $22.50 at the World's Biggest Bookstore on Sunday.

Well, it doesn't surprise me that it's not a chain-wide price reduction. It would depend on a few things (are they reducing the price to move stale stock or did they just recently receive it and the pricing is reflecting a new Canadian SRP?).

I'm quite disappointed that Ottawa still doesn't have a Word on the Street festival. Makes no sense to me.
