teddog: (OMFG! Explodes!)

I didn't make it to the big con in Toronto this weekend, but I got to visit Ribfest in Burlington! Am I a Canadian hick? Yeah, probably. Hey, at least I don't look like I walked out of Nascar race like many other people I saw tonight. I am a brat with a love of outdoor festivals and grilled food.

I wish I brought a camera. That place is just nuts. Imagine all these food booths on a waterfront, some with collections of banners and signs two stories tall! Well, there's a photo of a booth setting up here. What I can't find are photos of the huge tables full of trophies that the teams brought with them. I never realized how big ribs were. In Thunder Bay I remember the Great Chili Challenge, but that was small enough to fit in an average parking lot.

The lineups were about 40 minutes long, so we just picked one booth and stuck to it. Terry ended deciding for us, going with Gator BBQ from Everglades City, Flordia. My guess behind his thinking is that he lived in Flordia over 20 years ago and still has a very strong taste for southern cooking. The man lives for grits.

The ribs were pretty good and [livejournal.com profile] moonygirl and I split a rack. They were so much better than the bland ribs my aunt makes. There was a strong orange taste mixed with enough spice to give it a nice kick but not enough to make it overly hot. I wouldn't buy a bottle of the sauce, though, since it's hard to tell what parts of the nice mixture of tastes came from the sauce itself and what came from the open flame cooking process. Waiting in a 40 minute line to buy a bottle of sauce isn't very appealing, either.

On top of that, and I'm going to sound very childish here, but we got this "Gold Rush" soda from a vendor out of Ohio. Why? OMG SHINEY MUGS OF AWESOME! Yeah... it was alright, but that pop gave me some really bad gas later on. Blaaaaah. You can see photos of what looks like last year's Ribfest on that page. Note the tall sets of banners.
