teddogKatie and I noticed something rather silly the other day - She-Ra is probably the source of some Mary Sues from my generation. You can turn up your nose at the idea, but let's look at the life She-Ra/Princess Adora and highlight a few key points.
- She's introduced as the secret twin sister of the main character.
- Nobody knew about her because a magical character swiped the memories of 99% of the population as the loss would be too tragic to deal with.
- She was kidnapped by evil forces and raised to be evil.
- Of course, being evil wasn't really her fault, as she was being controled by evil magic and had no memory of her past as a princess.
- She later discovers who she really is and that she has magic powers comparable and probably stronger than the main character. This is proven by having her easily kick the butt of the main character's villian.
- Oh, and it should be mentioned that the villian suddenly turns out to be a male chauvinist, therefore giving this female character a reason to kick his butt.
- Her sword is more advanced than the main character's sword, as her's can shapeshift into other forms. It's also more sparkly than the main character's sword.
- Along with superhuman strength and stamina that she shares with the main character, she also has healing powers and the ablity to talk to animals.
- When she gives up her evil past, the character is accepted into the ranks of the good rebels with no questions asked. Everybody loves her.
- It's also not clear if this character has any flaws at all.
Many of these details and skills are used as evidence that a fan character is a Mary Sue. There's also other questionable character details in a more gray area, like her unusual name. This was a fantasy series, so the name isn't that out of place.
Therefore, either She-Ra is some sort of self insert... or all Mary Sues are really She-Ra.
