Jul. 6th, 2006 08:21 amFinished Chrono Crusade last night.
The ending to that manga series ended up being more than a little messed up. Is it in a good way? Probably not. There's a few glaring plot holes and WTFs that pop up.
First... the demons are aliens? That's what I got out of the flashback. The whole "mothership" and "planet" nonsense. However, it was explained that the demon/aliens arrived so long ago that no one remembers. Smells like an easy out, since they don't do anything with the idea. Maybe I need to read deeper.
ADV included the Epilogue, which turned out to be... an almost dreamlike series of events. The first part is a film created by an aging Azmaria. It explains that both Azmaria and Joshua lost their Apostle powers after the battle between Aion and Chrono and eventually married around the time Rosette died. HOWEVER, Azmaria somehow knew that Satella would somehow return. If this was just stubborness or a hangover from the Apostle skills isn't explained.
We then find out that the person watching the film in 1999 is... Satella?!? And she hasn't aged! Turns out that attack that she lauched against Fiore turned the two of them to crystal. They washed up on a shore during the 1990s and were sent to a labratory to try to return them back to living humans. One day the employees walk in and discover a living Satella on the floor, but no Fiore. Nice to see what happened to Satella, although it fell back to "Some stuff happened and nobody is sure how it happens, but be assured that something DID happen".
Actually, this could have gone two ways. Either the spell wore off, possible as Satella's spells did appear to have a time limit. The other opinion is hinted at when Satella visits Rosette's grave. Watching Satella and Azmaria's grandson are none other than Fiore and Shader. Nice to see that Shader lived through the final battle as well, as she walked into Aion and Chrono's final battle and probably overheard their chat about where they came from. I can see Shader being able to reverse the gem spell at some point, given that she played a major role in the creation of the technology the characters used. Fiore, now back to
ANYWAY, Satella and grandkid find flowers on Rosette's grave. Grandkid explains that this is unusual, given that the local of the grave isn't well know. It's also explained that the Order's records state that Chrono was killed in the 1920s. Satella accepts that she's the only one of the four still alive and that the world has changed greatly since her time.
However, we suddenly jump back to 1932 and see a flashback of Rosette suffering an attack. The time used up leading up to the final battle has shortened her life by a great amount, and she's now more or less dieing. Who should arrive to help her at the moment but Chrono, who is alive and well despite now being a full demon.
So, the game is now "Who's still alive in 1999?" Satella, Fiore and Shader are givens. As to who is placing the flowers and the conflict of the dates, I'm willing to guess that maybe Chrono is still around. However, everyone is disjointed, which appears to be one of the overall themes in the story; the idea of waiting for a loved one to return, even if they never will.
Will Satella and Chrono meet again? It's unclear. Fiore shows no interest in her sister and has choosen to stick with Shader. Satella and Chrono could end up like that, but I believe that Satella is going to move on and try to continue her now this displaced life.
Either way, the ending feels rather bittersweet.
