Jul. 5th, 2006 11:26 pmI think that Fullmetal Alchemist Profiles, AKA the English translation of the first Perfect Guidebook, needs to be forced down the throats of anyone who wants to touch FMA fan fic with a ten foot pole. Heck, I refuse to write for that fandom and this book is giving me too many ideas.
The book has fairly detailed discussions on the technology and culture of at least the manga end. Oh, and maps, because maps rock. On top of this, it's all written rather cutely. Hughes explains the country's political structures, Winry covers the cultural end. If you've read everything, you've got it covered mostly, although there's sections that deal with the creator that are rather wacky.
With all the effort gone into building a world for the series, it rather annoying that fandom trashes the background completely. There is no buttsex section. Get over it.

Date: 2006-07-07 01:33 pm (UTC)But seriously, even though there's a series guide for the first 7 volumes out, translated in English from the original Japanese, I still know that fanbrats are going to ignore it and play the "but fic is a fantasy and it can be anything!" card or the ever popular "It's not translated correctly!" card. Although, none of them can explain why are they still calling it fanfic when their versions of the characters are lower down to the stereotypes of a top and a bottom. All that's being written is a porny version of mad libs.
Sorry, I've been really, really bitter as of late. Call it the fallout from going to a con 2 months ago. I mean, look at this:

If you put any "genre" (a misused word in this case), like gen or het or femmeslash/yuri on the wristband, you would be ripped apart for being homophobic.
