Song of the South, Indeed.
Jun. 21st, 2006 11:35 amOkay, let it be known that I'm easily amused. This is old news to some of us up here, but I heard the phrase "South Toronto" today and laughed.
It was originally said by congressman John Hostettler (get the story behind it here) and I believe that it was an honest mistake. The man probably meant "South Ontario".
What he did say made many people here and elsewhere confused. Because of the nature of southwestern Ontario, it's hard to tell when Toronto ends and, say, Pickering begins and a lot of arrested wannabe terrorist were from the surrounding area, not really Toronto proper. But, none of the terrorists were arrested in towns south of Toronto, but south of Toronto is this:

Going down from the top of the GTA, there's the icky suburbs, North Toronto (Midtown), Downtown Toronto and the lake. If you keep going south, you hit the United States, namely New York state. I've never heard "South Toronto" even used in local conversation and I've lived most of my 22 years in Southern Ontario, barring the time at college.
The only other thing I can think of that brought this about was that Hostettler had his wires crossed when briefed about the case. While most of the arrested people are not from the southern end of Toronto, targets like the CN Tower, CBC building and the CSIS Toronto headquarters are along the waterfront.
There's quite a few people with their panties in a twist, probably because they're the overpaid yuppies that live in the southern edge of downtown Toronto in those overpriced condos that are stealing our waterfront:

What makes me upset is this statement has gotten people worried about "South Toronto", thinking it's a violent area:

This can't be helping US/Canada relations.
What really bothered me was: "He said that Canada was "a generation behind" the United States in understanding the threat of terrorism"
Since, you know, Air India Flight 182 and the FLQ didn't happen.
