teddogWhy must anime series piss me off compared to their manga counterparts? I asked Amanda about the Planetes anime and I learned something upsetting.
THERE'S NO KURO!
Kuro is... awesome. Hands down the most surreal character in all of the Planetes manga. A darn cute kitty too.
Kuro is a spiritual being in Planetes. I guess. There's two forms he appears in: a black cat and a white cat, and both only appear in Volume 3.
The black form is connected to Tanabe and served as her companion until she could speak and communicate with her adoptive parents. When Kuro left, Tanabe was able to call out his name and thus spoke for the first time.
The white form is a bit freakier and is connected to Hachimaki. Hachimaki sees a black cat get hit by a car. The cat gets up and drags itself off to the bushes to die. Later, when Hachimaki is in a meeting, this ripped up black cat appears again and causes Hachimaki to faint. Yeah, when you see a black cat missing some pieces, you tell me what you'd do. The cat reappears later in the chapter as a white cat... that talks to Hachimaki. It's kinda like a spirit guide thing, but Kuro is pretty amusing in a dry way. In his first appearence he tells Hachimaki "You say so much and nothing at all. Funny, that."
Okay, so it's a LITTLE freaky and that's probably why he appears in only the manga and not the anime.
And on a less surreal note, an amusing chat log:
Steff: The first meeting:
Mike> :::like a flash, he leaps out in front of Gruen and shines the mag in his face::: NO! We are not interested in some literature!!
Me: Was that from a log?
Steff: Yeah.
Steff: Really old one.
Me: Good times.
Steff: Of course!
Steff: Mike> :::decides not to mention Nan-Cy being uploaded into the X-Mansion database::: Okay, Enrico... I guess I gotta put this in more plain english, since you're not getting the subtle hints. Rick's one of us. You touch him, I hurt you. You don't leave property, I hurt you. You keep coming around, you find yourself in shallow grave.

Enrico: What the hell? I though you didn't want any literature and now you're handing out copies of the Watchtower!
Steff: ::screams!::
Steff: Beautiful!
Me: Just made that up now. XD
Steff: I almost snorted my Mike's Hard Lime through my nose. Very nice.
Me: Enrico's not smart enough to say that. My dreams, they are crushed!
Steff: That's too bad. It was really good.
