Aug. 18th, 2005 12:55 pmReviews for pop culture books make me laugh. They're so polarized; the review is either bright with celestial glory or cuts so deep you don't want think of how stitches it'll take to close that wound.
You either have to follow what book says exactly or be opposed it to. If you agree, you're higher brow. IF you don't, welcome to trailer park trash land, buddy!
If what we consume as a person reflects our position on the "culturally aware" scale, wouldn't that put the writers of such books very low? They consume all this "garbage" in order to present it back to the people in a slightly altered form. Yes, they are consuming for a reason, but they are still consuming and probably consuming more than the lower end.
Many people feel the need to humiliate people who's culture outlook is different than their own. If people consume a "lower" form of culture, they must be blind to how stupid it is and need the support of the better people to break free! Err... NO. Some of us willingly consume lower forms of culture because we find it entertaining.
I might not care for low-brow media that much, but take my b-movies away and I'll kill you. Amusement parks and fairs? Low brow excitment for the masses. I enjoy them anyway. There's something about the smell at the CNE in the early evening that's so... real. You can't find that in any higher end place of business.
On the other hand, I do mock media that makes me go "Meh?". Mocking media is fine, as we should all have the change to yell back at the one-way street. Insulting the people who consume the media, however, is just an excuse to make you feel better about yourself at the cost of others. Cheap shots = weak.
Am I better than other people? I'm thinking no. Do I care? Not really.
