Okay, I've known this for a while, but today I frightened the chicks working at the drop and add.

Lady at the Drop/Add desk: So you want another English class to make a full 30 credits?

Me: Yep.

Lady: And you're currently taking 3 English, 3 Multimedia, 2 Communication Studies and a Film course?

Me: Yep

Lady: ...

Me: Is something wrong? Did I max out my allowed English credits?

Lady: ...

Me: Uh?

Lady: ...No, that's not the problem...

Me: Then what is?

Lady: Well, we don't usually see people so sure of themselves and what they want to study until at least second year, sometimes even third. To see a first year student so certain of a chosen field of study when they've just started university is highly unusual.

Me: I'm not normal.

Lady (looking over timetable and me again): I can tell.

Turns out most first years pick a mixed bag of credits. When second year comes around, they then chose two or three courses to focus on. The thing is that I did that in high school. I studied a huge range of courses, giving me the oddest timetable in the school. My plan was to figure out exactly what I enjoy doing and pick my post-secondary education from there. Because I know my limits, I can have fun. I have a plan to get a combo BA in Multimedia and Communication Studies with a minior in English. Now while everyone is lost, I have a plan.

It impresses people, but scares the crap outta them too. I don't know why. Any ideas?

I know what I want.

Feh! I always wanted to do music. I flunked high school, but hey, I got my guitar. Uhm... kinda. It's my brother's... but I have my keyboard! But that needs electricity, and Dad pays for that... Shit.

Well I have my artistic soul! And no food. But I know what I want to do, and I knew all along, darn it. At least I can say that! :)

High school was a joke. I've known that I wanted to study media seen I was 3 years ago. The rest I discovered in high school.

The first year problem reminds too much me of that MST3K short "A Home Economics Story": A young high school student goes to a presentation and is brainwashed into thinking that she must go study Home Economics at college. She doesn't ponder why she wants to go study that, she just does it. Somehow she comes across as the perfect Nike customer. A year later, she sits down with her bong buddies and Ray the lampshade and they try to figure out exactly what they want to do with their lives... and they still have very few ideas. I wonder if they even realized the concept that they are paying for every minute of their education. I can't remember quite what they decided to do with their lives, but I think one of them decided to be a homemaker. There goes $24,000 down the toilet...
