No PoG yet....
Aug. 1st, 2007 12:42 amBut, through a series of odd events, I discovered a strange new movie this morning.
It's called "Felidae" and it's a German animated film that follows in the footsteps in Watership Down and Plague Dogs in that it's a film about animals based on books about animals, but is clearly not aimed at young children. It's based on a German crime novel... about cats. Namely, a cat named Francis who has moved with his owner to a new neighborhood and finds himself confused by the local culture and the amount of dead bodies that are starting to turn up.
Be warned that while it is an animated film, there are scenes with very disturbing and surreal images, gore, violence and a brief amount of sex. Due to this and the subject matter, the film was never released in North America, yet there was an English dub for English speaking European markets.
The pacing seems a bit off (the ending seems rushed) and some of the side plots are more than a little bizarre. The main plot deals with animal experimentation and genetics, with some parallels to Germany in WWII. While the ending comes off heavy handed, it's worth looking at as an animation curiosity. I'm more interested in the books, written by Akif Pirinçci. A few of these have been translated, but they're out of print. If anyone can help, I'll be your bestest best friend!
