Yeah. This "let's go kill Funi" crap is getting stupid, because some of these fans sound dead serious. That is scary.

Yesterday the dub for episode 13 of Fullmetal Alchemist came out on Cartoon Network.

Episode 13 is mostly a gag episode, being based on the gaidens "Military Party" and "Dog of the Military". Neither story was rather important to the overall plot of the manga, although the second one does explain the origin of Black Hayate.

Now there's a scene in the episode that, for the sake of spoilers, I'll just call the "discipline scene". If you've seen the episode or read the second gaiden, you'll know what I'm talking about.

The big stink is over a changed line that Riza says in the scene...

Original line: I discipline strictly. See? This is the toilet.
Dubbed line: You won't be trying that again, will you punk? You've got a strict mommy now.

Now, people are flipping out because "OH NOS! FUNI IS CHANGING RIZA'S CHARACTER. SHE WOULD NEVER CALL A DOG A PUNK!!!11!!"

For Pete's sake, I've always believed that what Hawkeye said wasn't aimed at the dog. Hawkeye is a symbol of strength and self-control. She wouldn't flip out on a dog so casually. The manga makes it pretty clear that her comments were aimed at the GUYS, not the dog. This is less obivious in the anime, but I've always figured that Hawkeye wanted to take a cheap shot at her co-workers... er... no pun intented. She was just messing with their heads.

In this case, the line works.

Some other reasons why the stink is a little silly:

1) It's a DUB. Let's look at media for a second: Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to consume. There's the fansubs still floating around and the DVDs are dual language. The dub was not intended for hard-core fans who have already seen this series several times with subtitles.

2) Techie reasons. The original line was way too short for the mouth movements in English.

3) The line is FUNNY. Be happy, because the angst train is just around the bend.

Now, if I REALLY wanted to be anal, I could say "OH NOS! They changed Fury's character!", which they did... slightly. Apparently he has an outburst at one point in the dub that wasn't there in the original. I'm not complaining, since the original anime succeeded at nothing but making the guy a total wimp. Heck, we never got to see him at his actual job. He was just.... there. o_O

So, YAY! The geek fights back!

So a "classic" line was changed. I fail to see why this requires the mass killing of media workers. At least they're giving you the option of having the original Japanese audio on the DVDs.
