Kaia, my psychology teacher, flaged me down in the college tonight.

It was in psych that I ripped a few new ones in a couple of closed minded peoples this afternoon. I didn't think too much of it, although I was kinda feeling bad about hurting Jay. He's going through a tender point in his life.

Anywho, I thought she was going to chew me out for what I did class. I was a little rough, I'll say.

Ooooohh no, she didn't tell me to never do that again. She PRAISED me. A lot.

Kaia said there's an unusual rift in the class (and the multimedia program in general) that she's worried about. The girls in class scored as high, if not higher, than the boys on both the midterm and the essay. However, most of the girls never speak up in class and the boys control the flow of class until I walk in and throw the flow of the class my way. It's apparently like Jon, Tyler and myself, among others, are part of a massive power struggle. o_O

I mentioned it may be because some of us are scared to speak up. As I explained, back in high school I was courses with very few, if any, other female students and I was scared to speak up in class because the boys would make fun of me if I got an answer wrong. Why? Because I was "the girl". The program is right now 2:1 boys to girls. I'm accepted in some groups of guys, if only because I'm "one of the guys" when it comes to programming. But it's kinda sad that I'm "the girl who can program and rant about the media longwindedly", and not just "Rachelle"

Kaia also said I was the kind of "sassy young woman" that the media in general is lacking right now. I have never been called "sassy" before. Ever. Along with the other things she called me, "well-read", "smart", "open minded", etc, needless to say, I was giddy for the rest of the evening. EGO BOOST! Fweeee!

We also talked about the gender ideals (and how gross the male ideal is. Yucky.), female writers and characters and our favorite ones. You try explaining Nance. "There was this show about underground media and pirate broadcasters and there was a female computer AI character that I fell in love with because she was so completey different from any female character I had seen before. She was the aggressive, sarcastic, cocky character, totally different from the male characters in the series." The Powers That Be would kill me. Go Nan-Cy! ^_^

So it appears I'm another person's spazzy little prodigy. Even if Kaia is only trying to give me a quick self esteem kick, almost every other teacher seems to like me. I'm just so darn lovable.

And I put a good word for ye, Tas. I told her "If you think I get worked up on this issue, wait until Laura comes. Then the blood will really start flowing."

Hm, Kaia does something uncharacteristically good. o.O I am intreagued...

Really though, it's nice to hear that the profs are telling you what you're good at and stuff. XD It's always great to get some ego boosting going on. I never speak up in class because I'm always afraid I'll get the answer wrong... and most of the guys there are like... -_-; They're the types that I was always afraid of arguing with because they could easily make me look stupid. But I'm slowly getting better about that. Slowly. ^^;

Kaia's actually pretty good about the gender topic. You can tell it's really a topic she's, you know, actually passionate about. Unlike some things...

Quite a few of the guys in the program are pretty dumb and just try to cover it up. Word is that they have chats about what girls in the program they want to screw, which is just.... yuck. That attitude toward us is disgusting. Although one day, out of the blue, Nick commented that he would never want to get into a media debate with me. I think I'm getting a bit of a rep among fellow students. *giggles*

Com'on. Speak up in class with me. 'Tis fun and makes people scared of you!

What the... that's really sick. -_- I mean, guys will be guys and I guess everyone looks at other people and thinks about how cute they are.. but man, keep it to yourself. For a while, I had started to forget about the horrible sex objectifying towards women on behalf of retarded men but... well, now I'm reminded again. -_-; S'what I get for being around a bunch of guys who, while joking about sex often, don't actually go and discuss who'd they'd fuck openly like that. Grr. So shallow. =_= I should probably write an entry in my own LJ about that sort of thing.

It's just going to get worse as we go along. Media = the old boys club. This is a general thing and not just limited to the US. I was thinking about it the other day. My real life media hero is Rick Green. Mr Green is a guy, obviously, but being a girl growing up in a media rich area like the Greater Toronto Area, shouldn't I have picked up on a female role model? I was raised to respect and support Canadian media by my father, which is where I found Green's work. I keep thinking it over and I can't remember ANY major females in the Toronto/Canadian media. There were some female news reporters and a couple of secondary characters on kid's shows, but that was the limit to it.

We are a threat because we are going where women shouldn't go, 'cause women are just sexual objects and shouldn't have power or whatnot. Look at Oprah: a powerful women with her own little mini media empire. We can openly mock her because she's a woman and shouldn't be doing that thing. Hell, if she gains even a pound it's a big public fuss, yet men in control of media can let themselves go because physical appearence isn't as important. If there was a female version of the Trailer Park Boys, you could certain that it would not be as popular as the version we have right now.

The fact that I had a rep based on my intelligence in the program kinda impressed me, though. I'm fairly ugly by our culture's standards and I'm often treated like an idiot by jackasses like Joey. If you're overweight, apparently that makes you instantly stupid or mentality handicapped. Okay, I know I'm insane, but I CHOOSE to behave that way. It's a better response to stress than getting violent or cranky.
