teddogI just watched 3 of the 4 DVDs in my new MST3K boxed set. I commented the other day about how I thought the art for the fourth set was my favorite. I hadn't seen anything until I saw the box first hand. It's so cool, even more so when you compare it to the old VHS package designs. The VHS tapes have nothing on the DVDs. Sure, the box still looks cheesy and lack the sheer clean beauty of the movie laserdisc packaging, but it's so shiney.
::Cough:: On to the contains of the set itself, tonight was the first real time I o.d.'ed on the Sci-Fi era. Mystery Science Theater 3000 is often broken into several eras, the Sci-Fi era being the last one running from seasons 8 to 10, when the show aired on Sci-Fi. MST3K Volume 4 marks the first time that Sci-Fi era episodes have been released on DVD.
Being a Canadian MiSTie and lacking access to almost anything but the released tapes, I've only seen episodes from the Comedy Channel/Central eras. Joel with Forrester and Frank, Mike with Forrester and Frank and one episode with Joel, Forrester and Erhart (am I the only fan who actually liked Erhart?). And now I have DVDs of the Sci-Fi era. Wheee...
The Sci-Fi era ISN'T as bad as some die hard fans have led me to believe. The segments are often a lot sillier, but I don't mind much. I've write a full review once I get through the last episode.
Oh... AND I GOT TO SEE NANITES IN AN EPISODE! Yes, that was a big highlight for me. Nanites are cute, but slightly evil. Does the TTPCTS Club have nanites? It would rock if we did.
