Today is happy, happy day.

I started my new job and I like it very much. I'm an inventory clerk now! I get to carry around a big hand held scanner and tell off store employees.

As mentioned before, my brothers have a crappy PC. It plays Permanent Daylight. Therefore, in theory, it should play older DOS games...

Including the thing I've wanted to try out since I was 15...

Ladies and gents, Katie and I played the second PC version of Maniac Mansion tonight, and darn, it's one funky ride.

Actually, I see where the "purist" fans get off from. It's this version of the game that cause all the problems in the fandom, not the NES one like I first guessed. There's some odd imagary here, folks. I can't quite explain it, other than the game is probably trying to get in touch with the horror side of it's roots. The series is based on a combination of horror and science fiction b-movies, after all. It's a pretty balanced mix of the two in the other versions/ports, but the horror wins over here.

It's still funny and goofy and unedited (bite me, Nintendo). The second version is most or less the original C-64 with better graphics and an upgraded engine (SCUMM version 2, I think). The character sprites and backgrounds are colourful and detailed. Keep in mind this was released in 1988, but the art is miles ahead of the original release (1987).

Character design... it varies. I'm a fan of Gary Winnick's original designs for the series. Even with the limited graphics it's easy to tell the characters apart. The detailed versions of these sometimes work and sometimes don't. The noticable problem with the character design on the package not matching the game is fixed a bit, mostly with Jeff and Dave. Except Dave has an afro now, but I love Jeff's sprite. It's plain goofy, which Jeff is. Or should be. Syd scares me, though. He reminds me of Bird the Painter from Off Beat Cinema. This is odd since I like both Syd and Bird. Whatever. I don't like the art for the Edisons or the Tentacles. I prefer the DOTT-era or even the C-64 designs a bit more.

Oh and the walking animation is the funniest thing I've seen! It's like Bernard's jog/walk from Day of the Tentacle. Makes more sense for the characters to jog than shuffle and it looks cute. We need a GRIME based remake where the characters can break into a flat out run if need be.

The cursor is still painfully slow like the C-64 version and the engine uses the 15-verb format, complete with the "What Is?". ::groan:: It's not too bad right now, but when Katie and I get futher in the game the room raids are going to SUCK. No need to comment on the "2 minutes to save the world" scene. Need... fast... NES... cursor... *_*

Will comment more as I get deeper into the game. I'm trying to enjoy this as much as I can. I waited long enough.
