More Canadian TV on DVD...
Dec. 5th, 2007 12:23 pmIn a move that baffles the heck out of me, the Halifax Film Company has started putting This Hour Has 22 Minutes out on DVD.
Fake news programs have never struck me as having a decent chance at the home video market as season sets given that they tend to focus on current events and don't age very well. So, I'm pretty much at a loss as to why 22 Minutes is coming onto DVD, let alone why they're starting with the 93-94 and 94-95 seasons! Unless someone is a long time fan of the series (or, heck, even a fan of CODCO), we're talking about a fairly big change in the cast between the first two seasons and the current one.
I dunno. I'm not a massive 22 Minutes fan and my memories of reruns of the first seasons are that they don't hold up very well. There's a few skits that I actually liked from the series, like Tiny Mine and...

(yes, I just wanted to use that image again), but Tiny Mine was only funny if you knew about Giant Mine and the made for TV movie that the CBC aired around the same time. The ONLY reason I remember Giant Mine is because of the skit. And Poncho Village is only from 2004 or so and really isn't that old.
There's probably some market for Rick Mercer material and yeah, part of me wants to get the set to see the really old Streeters bits, maybe revisit how political material at the time was handled in comedy, but other than that...
And at this point, I bet half of my friend's list is thinking the same thing: "22 Minutes is on DVD?! Where's Four on the Floor?"
