It's very much a say what you will thing...
Honest Ed's is really tacky. There is simply no two ways about it. The place looks like it belongs on some east coastal city where tourists come in during the summer to buy cheap goods and visit aging amusment parks, only to forget about it in the winter.
To that point, that's the charm of the store. It doesn't belong in this time or place.
This aside, the man had a life outside of discount stores. He gave away free turkeys every Christmas, had massive block parties for his birthday with free food and entertainment and did more than his fair share of supporting the Toronto theatre scene. Alright, Broadway theatre isn't always high culture, but the story of how he got into theatre is a silly fluke. It's just one of those stories that can be summed up as "That's Toronto for you!".
And really, that's what it boils down to. Mirvish was a showman, a character. While a lot of people will bitch and moan about how his kind lowered the standards of Toronto, it's very hard to imagine a Toronto without him.
It just seems to be a bad summer for the Toronto culture that some of us like to cling to. Sam's is closed, Bell and Rogers are battling over ChumCity, Ed is gone...
What's next? Russell Oliver getting busted for some massive crime? Actually, this I wouldn't mind seeing. The current generation of local characters is awful.
