The humour reminds me a lot of Phoenix Wright - "It's mostly goofy humour, but watch out! Here's some random plot twists that lean towards the dark!". However, it's not a strong as Phoenix Wright because it's simply not as plot-driven. Each of the missions has a plot, but we don't really know that much about the title characters. Most of the action is based around the characters in need... until Mission 15.
I just don't get Mission 15.
Now, I'm not complaining about how dark it gets. Mission 12 (the Christmas one) makes me cry every time I play it and I have no problem with emotional content in such a goofy game. It's shocking at first, but you can believe that the events in Mission 12 can happen in this world.
Mission 15... ehhhh.... it reminds me of War of the Worlds meet Red Dawn. It would make more sense if there was some build up - with Phoenix, it's hinted that things aren't quite what they seem. In EBA, it's sudden. The Japanese game that EBA is based off of, "Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan", also has a grave final mission, but it's not quite as dark; it doesn't take place in a concentration camp.
I woke up from sleeping tonight and - just out of curiosity - looked at FF.N to see if there's any fic for the game. There's one, a piece of weak shipping fluff.
