teddog: (Pirate Broadcaster!)

I have decided that codeine and I are not friends and I have stopped talking Tylenol 3s. Since these were more or less narcotics, I am completely lost on how people can handle the "trips" that narcotics cause. I'm taking these pills for pain and still suffered what can be described as a very bad trip.

After taking some Tylenol 3s last night, I was tossed into a more than slightly creepy state of existance. The opening credits of Texas Chain Saw Massacre where enough to put me into an odd and deep state of depression. Something about the music. This coming from someone who's seen her fair share of horror movies and has run horror RP plots before. I freaked right out and HAD to change the channel or else I would die or so I thought.

Flipped it to The Daily Show and Colbert Report. These became very, very lucid. Let's not go into details, but The Word segement was stranger than normal.

On the side, there's also been nausea and bathroom issues.

So, I've stopped and I'm now on extra strength Advil for pain. This is much better, as the effects of one dose of Tylenol 3s lasted longer than 6 hours and well into the day. They'd make me sedated and generally odd most of the day. Right now it's been over 24 hours since my last dose and it feels like the first time since Sunday morning that I've been able to think straight and not be under the influence of drugs or pain.

I won't blame the doctor; I needed those pills to sleep the first night and he warned me that as soon as I don't need them, get off the suckers.

That scariness aside, let's talk about something fun, like unintential humour!

One day I'm going to gather the nerve to interview Mark Askwith about some things, like the fate of the chair from PoG. There's also something else that's stood out...

Tonight I was researching YTV's old Short Circuitz segements, which I'll talk about later. I found a copy of an video used on the segements, but under "Related" was the following:
"WTTW Chicago - Max Headroom Pirating Incident - 11-22-87"
I would have been only 4 when this happened, so of course I was curious. After watching the clip, I thanked the lucky stars that I'm off Tylenol 3s. The clip in question is located here and features a man who hijacks into a PBS signal while dressed as Max Headroom, rambles about some random crap, moons everyone and then gets his butt smacked with a fly swatter, after which the signal cuts out again.

So, what's the point to this? Well, it's clear that PoG owes a little something to the actual Max Headroom. If you dig slightly deeper, you can find an online interview with Mark Askwith that explains that the original format for PoG was to be a short filler series would air right after Doctor Who. Given that this incident happened only 2 years before and was a real pirate broadcast over Doctor Who... I don't know. Interesting coincidence.

It gets odder when you learn that there's stories that the first few episodes of PoG were reedited by higher ups at TVOntario before the episodes went to air. Apparently this was done into order to change to "feel" of the show, which would be of a pirate broadcast. Maybe they wanted to avoid having something that looked like what happened in Chicago.

On a side note, here's how real pirate broadcasting works in connection with this incident: The pirate broadcaster(s) first hijacked the signal of WGN during the sports section of a news broadcast. The pirate signal appeared onscreen for about 30 seconds before WGN managed to override and cancel out the pirate signal. When WTTW was hijacked, the entire video played because being a PBS station, WTTW lacked the technology to up the power on the signal and cancel out the pirate. The broadcast ended when the tape ended. Of course, WTTW claims that they've since corrected this so it wouldn't happen again. The guys behind the broadcast were never caught, even almost 20 years later.
