Aug. 31st, 2005 09:17 amOmly we are stupid enough to go to the drive in during the remains of a hurricane.
We ended up seeing Madagascar and Charile and the Chocolate Factory.
Madagascar... alright, I need to remind myself not to look forward to kid/family movies because the lack of plot will always let me down... much like most of the jokes. I loved the 2-D character art from Madagascar's preproduction. The final art isn't as interesting, although I'm pleased to see a CGI film that doesn't try to be insanely photo-realistic.
And then we moved onto Charile and the Chocolate Factory. Now, I like the source material. Even if it's really just a bloated morality tale, it's a really cute one. Anyway, the movie is fairy fateful to the book, although not so much to the first movie. My favorite subplot in the first movie, the one with Slugworth, doesn't appear at all.
The new subplot we do get is very darkly amusing, although kids probably would find it depressing. I laughed at it, but I'm cruel. And it's got Christopher Lee in it! Even if you think it sucks, Christopher Lee makes it worthwhile. There are so few actors that have the onscreen presence of that man.
The most bizarre nod to the books it that the origin of the Oompa Loompas is a fusion of the two different origins given in the books. I don't consider this a spoiler, since it has more to do with censorship, but in the first printings the Oompa Loompas were African pygmies. They later became strange hippie creatures from Loompaland.
You have to see this film, if only for Violet's mother. XD The only thing I could have done without is that Wonka comes across as a pediophile. o.O

Date: 2005-08-31 10:43 pm (UTC)Was it still at the raining buckets point, or was it at the "the world is being sprayed with a giant mist bottle"?

Date: 2005-09-04 12:39 pm (UTC)Despite the amount of damage in the south, this one was quite weak when it hit southern Ontario. Usually we get high winds when the storms hit us, but it was limited to just lots of rain this time. And even that wasn't that bad, since the rain was nothing compared to the storm that hit around August 19.
