Dug Up On YouTube - Captain Star

Captain Star is a... very strange show from 1997-1998. I bumped into it back when it was airing on Teletoon. The series was doomed in its Canadian run from the start, as Teletoon's original promotional materials were pushing this as an adult animated comedy series. And that's what it sorta is, but Teletoon came on the air when adult animation was the kingdom of crude and racy jokes. This show has some moments, but South Park it isn't. It's also not really a kid's show either, due to the somewhat dark subject matter.
It's hard to explain just what this show is about. At first glance, it's a parody of Star Trek and early science fiction novels, but under the surface it's more complex than that. It's not about the space adventures of the brave crew who hop from world to world and have adventures. It's about an aging crew who were heroes in the past, although what good they really did is up for debate. They're remembered by society through a TV show recounting their adventures, but Mission Control has long since forgotten about them and they're left to rot at the edge of the universe as they await orders.
This, of course, sounds extremely dark. Some of the comedy is twisted like that, but most of it is more absurd and almost whimsical. Like I said - very strange show, never managed to find an audience. But, that said, it's worth watching. In terms of content, there's some sexual references, but it's mostly kept to subtext.
I've been rewatching it tonight and it still holds up, all these years later. The whole series is on YouTube. There's no overarcing plot connecting the episodes and the main set up is explained in the opening, so I don't think that episode order matters too much.

A collection of the comics this is based on is coming out this fall. I'm probably going to look into getting it.
