... Discovery Channel footage got found first. HA!

I'm not sure if the Discovery Channel in Canada was separate from Discovery in the US. I believe that may explain that whole EXN.ca thing. Who remembers that? Who remembers this logo?

I DO! I DO!

Now, early Discovery Channel in Canada had issues. Um, many issues. Like many early tier stations (and some newer ones) they had content problems! CanCon regs, you know. It also could not promote worth crap at the beginning. This means laughing for us.

FEAR THE AD SCREENS )

You have to imagine there being cartoony music being played in the background. There was a better ad that appears later in the Discovery run that parodies the Star Wars scrolling text with much better, if with stereotypical music (sounds like the season one credits music, but less tippy). I can't find my copy of that.

Because the show is hacked up (the original has no ads), Discovery put in these bumpers. They mostly use the comic art and aren't nifty outside of giving you a faint idea at how the program was presented. Also note that the TVOntario logo is loud and clear.

And before I go off, I usually like posting caps from another ad I find on these things. I found one for Future File:

Given this was probably recored in 1998, ten years ago actually they're probably from much eariler in the 1990s, they were probably talking about us. There's something to ponder.

Okay, so I was chatting with my buddy Jesse last night, which burned down into the spamming of TV show openings from YouTube. Ha! Actually it really spiked my interest in more PoG work - Jesse is the guy who got me those Discovery tapes, upon many other things over the years. Great guy.

Now, I finally got my Toronto library card (my local branchs are Northern District, Mount Pleasant and Leaside, pray for them) and have discovered that I have access to a crapload of online magazine archives. This is how I got those Star articles a couple of years back, so I've decided to dig around and see what there is to see.

Turns out the the Globe and Mail has scanned all of their back issues like the Star did, only they scanned a copy with Toronto ads. While I haven't seen an article for PoG, I have uncovered a pile of TVOntario ads! A lot of them don't push PoG so far (I'm at January 1990 at the moment) - the one that announces the series starting is very strange in itself. I'm collecting all that I can find if only because it's so darn interesting to see how promotion was handled there at that time.

No clue what I'm going to do with these. I might just slap the non-PoG related ads up here just for a "Welcome to the 1990s!" trip.

Well, for poor me, anyway. Now you too can be baffled by the term "space ark":

That's official TVOntario material, guys.

Let it sink in...

....

SPACE ARK.

And so I don't smite you, don't be stupid like me and pick up a pack of Nordica's fruit-at-the-bottom cottage cheese. IT'S SO GROSS.

Also, why do so many yogurt packs include vanilla? :(
