The CTRC as allowed CTVglobemedia (oh gosh I HATE that name XP ) to buy CHUM Ltd if and only if they sell off all five CityTV stations.

And here, I wonder if anyone else caught what this will do to the CHUM brand.

I grew up with CityTV. The original CITY-TV (that's the call, sign), in Toronto. In my mind's eye, I think of CITY as the CITY I grew up with, except that... it's not. That's been lost for over 10 years or so.

It's hard to explain to someone who never grew up with CITY, but the problem with CityTV and the rest of the CHUM stations is that most of those secondary specialty channels are directly tied into CityTV. They were designed to feed off of each other.

Examples?

MuchMusic? Came from music programming on City.
Bravo's retro porno flicks? Spun off of City's Baby Blue Movies.
FashionTelevision? Originally a weekly show on City.
SexTV? Ditto.
CablePulse 24? Yeah, this is "CityTV News! All the time!"

The stations, especially Much and City, share resources and programming. Speaker's Corner, for example, was a program originally in City that was spun off onto the other stations. A lot of the CHUM stations share the same building on Queen Street, in Toronto.

From my point of view, this move guts the centre of the CHUM TV universe. Yet, at the same time, I can't help but be happy that City isn't going to end up in the hands of CTV. I never liked this buyout to begin with. Most people in this country didn't grow up in the Toronto area when CityTV exploded and thus, don't see the connection there. It's just a minor footnote.

The connection really isn't there anymore, anyway. The CityTV I knew still hanging on, but lacks whatever spark that make it special before. The end of the era probably came with the last Tree Toss. If the station is sold to another company. it'll be pulled out of the building, the logos at Queen and John will be painted over and life will continue on, as usual.

I just can't help but wonder if we're losing something in the process. Seriously, Toronto doesn't change that much. Not like this. Go watch Subdivsions. Toronto today is pretty much the same, plus and minus a couple of buildings. Plus it's a really goofy video (check out the ending with the trippy colours), although I like the song.

Hee. I swear I hear "growing up it all seems so one-sided" as "growing up in/on Ossington".
