teddog: (Church - The Bishop)
Church meetings that end up in a Word of Wisdom discussion are always entertaining. In Canada, we have an odd variable that can produce an endless argument on the subject. It's name is Coffee Crisp. Coffee Crisp is supposed to be moving into the US market soon (we'll have to see about getting the Aero bars down there next, [livejournal.com profile] msp_hacker), so maybe we'll see some amusing spinoffs in the LDS comms soon.

Coffee Crisp is a Canadian candy bar that happens to be one of the best selling candies in the country. It's not unlike a Kit Kat Chunky bar, being a chocolate covered wafer bar. The issue comes from what's in a Coffee Crisp - COFFEE! Actually, there's not a lot of coffee in the bar, given that it's tucked away on the ingredients between several chemicals and only used to flavour the hunk of fluffy filling between the wafers. It's so well hidden that many people will swear that there's nothing close to coffee in there.

'Course, this doesn't really bother me, because I would rather take Smarties, Aero, Max 5, Reese Peanut Butter cups, Kit Kat, Jersey Milk or Twix over Coffee Crisp any day. I never really liked Coffee Crisp too much; I find the texture too smooth to be enjoyable, which is my problem with Milky Way/Mars and 3 Musketeers bars.

However, I know many church members that love Coffee Crisp bars and others that are strongly opposed to it. The result is the Coffee Crisp Circle of Death:

Person 1: I like Coffee Crisp and there's nothing that says we can't eat chocolate! (Insert reference to the evil chocolate haters here)
Person 2: But there's coffee in it!
Person 1: No! There isn't! It's weak coffee flavouring!
Person 2: (Finds the hidden coffee in the ingredients)
Person 1: Well, the rule is about drinks. I'm not drinking my candy bar!
Person 3: (Makes reference to Coffee Crisp chocolate milk, but goes unnoticed)
Person 2: The coffee could have been added to the bar in a liquid form!
Person 4: This argument is moot! I believe that the WoW is against anything unhealthy that we put into our bodies, like white bread, dairy and donuts.
(In light of the extremist, everyone mentions that all food should be in moderation and that donuts are an important part of Canadian culture. The debate repeats itself)
