Found over on the Space boards:

"SF fans are very demanding, and very particular about their shows. A Buffy fan might loathe Andromeda. A Star Trek fan might wonder what all the fuss about Battlestar Galactica is. A Prisoners of Gravity fan will wonder why I waste my time here."
- Mark Askwith

EDIT: After more digging, I finally got a solid answer on WHY PoG was never picked up by SciFi. This might be mildly amusing to all you MST3K fans that remember how SciFi mucked up with that series. Although the thought of both series on at the same channel is amusing, in that stupid way that I find such things.

Anyway, more from the wisdom of Mark:

"Why a show might not get carried...

... is a very complex decision.

As a producer, I've been on both sides of this...

My favorite story-

Over a decade ago I pitched the SciFi Channel 'Prisoners of Gravity'.
A half hour of Award winning tv for...
get this...

wait for it...

$103 CDN per episode.

... and they passed.

So, sometimes a broadcaster will pass on your show, and you'll sit there scratching your head wondering why.

During the last 'pitch season' I was told that my show was 'really great', but they passed because, in the words of the executive- 'I don't air shows that are simply merely great, I want a show that bites me in the ass...'

So I was flattered, and disappointed at the same time..."

The subject of demographics never came up.

They wanted us to cover more movies, and fewer books... (insert screaming Rick Green laughter here... 'But, Mark, don't they realize it's a BOOK show?!!'...
.. and even funnier, I was ofering them shows that were already finished. Cut. Aired.

Sigh.

The mind boggles.
