So full... *burp*
Aug. 15th, 2005 04:41 pmIn case I've never mentioned it before, Janet is a long time friend of our family. She married Terry, my dad's old pinball buddy and is the mother of Lisa, who has been my friend for about 21 years.
One notable fact is that Janet lived in Japan for several years. She's my source of random Japanese knowledge and I have heard many a random story, like how she crashed her bike into a rice field.
So, since I'm going bye-bye for my birthday and
moonygirl's birthday is just over a week away, she decided to take us to this Japanese restaurant for lunch. Turns out I like miso soup. A lot. Maybe it's the seaweed, because I've always liked that. Tried a beef roll, but I wasn't too keen on it. I'm more of a fish and seafood person. They had egg nigiri and inari, which never fail to make me a happy little person.
Afterwards, we went to Jackson Square to show Janet the candy store... but it was closed. While looking for a washroom, we found an Asian Food Store, so we wandered around - for an hour. Janet would find various products that she hadn't seen in over 20 years and explained how they were served.
Oh! And we FINALLY have an answer to the long running Pocky confusion. Just how do you pronounce the name?
The original way WAS "Pokey". Janet has boxes from when she lived in Japan and the characters on the boxes confirm this. However, there was a mistranslation into English, resulting in "Pocky". It appears that the English pronunciation was later adopted by the Japanese. So, either way is correct.
Janet bought me a box of giant pocky. I was supposed to get a box at Christmas from Lisa, but they couldn't find a box at the time. We both were in seminary together, and pocky was our snack food of choice at 5am. Yes, pocky for me is related to religious studies and not media fandoms. For the life of me, I can't remember when that started, but it was probably on some massive sugar high. But then, that's 99% of what I can remember from seminary. I think pocky was related to the running Star Wars jokes and the pocky sticks were lightsabres. Everyone was given a nickname based on Star Wars characters. I'm pretty sure I was Chewie, since at that time in the morning I talked in a series of grunts.
Anywho, THIS POCKY IS HUGE! Like the size of breadsticks. o_O Each stick is wrapped on its own, which 24 sticks in a box. I'll take photos when I finish my last plushie and shoot photos of my sewing project (plushie keychains and Not-quite-Hayate pillow).
Tas, if you're reading this and thinking that I should try to grab a box for CCAC, each box was $13 and there was Strawberry and Chocolate.
On the way back to the car, I ducked into a science/geek store. They have a lame little shirt I want. A star map is printed on it, with the words "I have no idea where I am!". I think that suits me. XD
