AKA "Why stupid 20 year-olds shouldn't play Sonic games when said 20 year-old has a business meeting in the morning."

After two days of playing, I must admit that I'm quite taken, I suppose, by the new versions of Vector, Espio and Charmy. E-123 Omega flat out rocks my socks (and causes me and my brother to laugh our heads off... "Use outside stairs"), but I wasn't expecting Team Chaotix to have so much impact on me. Having played Sonic Heroes, I have dubbed them the "Frat Boys of the Sonic World"... not counting that fact that Charmy is only 6... and paying no attention to the growing amount of Vector/Espio slash that seems to be appearing online.

I seem the only fan who has little problems with the team. Vector's accent and the deepness of Espio's voice took a while to get used to, but are fine with me now. I can stand Charmy's VA, even though he says the stupidest things. He's supposed to be 6 year-old boy. Of course he's going to say something dumb. Does anyone have problems with Cream being overly polite because she's a 6 year-old girl? Good. Let's move on. The only thing that bothers me is some of Espio's lines. He's supposed to be the most serious of the group, yet some of the things he says come out odd. Unless, by chance, he's not really the badass ninja he's trying to make himself out to be and is more like the moon ninjas from the anime Planetes (sp?).

Anywho, since I like the team so much, I've really been pushing hard to get through all their stages. I like the mission/puzzle side to their gameplay and get a kick from their cutscenes and their chatter in the levels.

Tonight, after a 30 half tour of Hang Castle (stupid flowers!), I finally reached the level Mystic Mansion.

Now... I like the Castle/Mansion set of levels. They're quite cool. Hang Castle is insane to play. Imagine the Death Egg zones in the 2D games where you could reverse the gravity. Now imagine that in a 3D, with a horror theme and much more open design than a space station. It causes bottomless pits by the hundreds, but it looks so cool. Mystic Mansion is, on the other hand, very confined and is kinda like what I'd imagine the Maniac Mansion games to look like in 3D. =)

So, I'm playing Team Chaotix in Mystic Mansion. Nothing really new - I'd already cleared it with Team Rose - but I'm happy playing along with my new favorite Sonic characters, not noticing that I'm half asleep.

Then the stranginess starts.

The goal for the level is to blow out all the red flames with Espio's leaf swirl move. This is all fine and dandy at first.

Then, in the chatter that occurs between the characters, Charmy starts singing about things he can see that no one else can. Okay, that's a little unnerving, but I can handle that.

AND THEN I START SEEING STRANGE CRAP. Like... paintings that become robots.

I think the point that sent me over the edge was the part with the gaint door in the middle of the room. I look that the door for a moment and this skeleton kinda pokes his head and hands around the door, looks around, and then goes back to hiding behind the door. I take my characters behind the door and there's nothing there.

I looked at the TV, then at my controller and said "I think that's enough for me" and turned the game off.

It probably wouldn't bother me if I was playing during the day, but in the early morning, half asleep and all alone, it was more than a little freaky.
