"There's no 'TEAM' in 'I RULE'"
I beat Earthbound today! It took me just over a week to do it too. Not too bad for my first real role playing (non-adventure) game, if I dare say so myself. I only had to use a walkthrough TWICE; first, to figure out why the door behind the waterfall wouldn't open (I didn't wait long enough) and second, to figure out why the last boss didn't die after I shot him (it?) right into next week. Turns out that you were suppose to pray 9 times, not 8. I figured that after the 8th prayer failed to contact anyone, I had to deal with Giygas the olde fashioned way, but noooo....
Anywho... sooo... yes, Earthbound. Cool little game, it is. Not as close to my heart as the Maniac Mansion series, but then what game is? It's worth a ROM download, if only the Blues Brother-ish band that plays an important role early in the plot, although Jeff Andonuts is far and away the coolest character in the game. How can you not like a geeky little boy who just so happens to be one of the best sharpshooters on the planet? :-P
