Another Fic
I didn't expect to write a fic tonight, let alone a Maniac Mansion fic! I normally hate pairings in this fandom, but I got hit with this random idea and, after thinking it through, I rather liked it. It started as a drabble and grew to a slightly longer fic.
Title: Blonds Have More Fun
Fandom: Maniac Mansion
Characters: Syd and Laverne
Summary: While escaping from a party, two unsual strangers bump into each other.
Rating: PG.
Warnings: References to abuse towards hamsters.
It had been Dave's idea to hold the reunion party at the derelict house-turned-motel on the edge of town, something that Syd never quite agreed to. The events on that chilly night in 1985 summarized his first awful year at college and coming back opened those old wounds anew.
The tall blond stuck against the dingy wall with his drink, avoiding eye contact with anyone and slowly shifting along towards the door and freedom. Completely by chance, he knocked shoulders with a young woman doing the same thing. They ended up startling each other and she dropped her drink onto the already stained carpet.
“Sorry, miss..” Syd looked at the woman for a moment before bending over to pick up the glass. He couldn't place a name to the quick glance he got of her face, but then again, he had attempted to forcefully forget all those memories from that school year.
“Not your fault,” she said, trying to brush off the liquid that split onto her sweater. She looked more embarrassed about the damp spot than actually dropping the glass. “My mother says I've got a bit of a nervous twitch.”
Syd stood back up and handed the glass back. This was the first time he managed to get a good look at the woman. She was a touch homey looking with a messy hair of blonde hair. Not quite his type, but she looked equally uncomfortable being around here.
The woman rubbed the side of the glass. “So...”
“If you'd excuse me, I'm on the way out.” While he never thought of himself as a polite gentleman, Syd wasn't in the mood to pick a fight tonight. Anyone here tonight was involved with the two separate break-ins and anyone willing to burst into the Edison mansion without a second thought was not someone to tangle with.
“Really?” The woman's tone of voice brightened. “I thought I was the only one.” She continued down the wall, signaling with her head for Syd to follow.
There wasn't anything else to do. Syd rolled his eyes behind his shades, not believing he was following a woman on this great escape. He grudgingly took the passenger seat until they reached the door.
The front porch was a lot small than he remembered it and the lack of space felt as awkward as the tension between the two for them. Looking to remove the lesser of the two pressures, Syd forced himself to make the first move.
“So.”
“So?”
That didn't get very far. “I never caught your name back there.”
The woman tilted her head. “Never gave it. Laverne.”
It was a intriguingly different name, Syd noted. He raised his hand. “Syd. So, Laverne, do you do anything?”
Laverne gave an insane, nervous little laugh. “Nope. I'm a first year medical student. I have no life outside of class.”
“Oh.” Syd replied flatly.
That earned him a dirty look. “Don't act there's something wrong with a female medical student.”
Syd shook his head and folded his arms. His shades probably hid most of the nasty look he gave Laverne. “I don't have anything else to do tonight and somehow hanging out with a chick who shoves her nose in textbooks all day long doesn't seem like a fun idea.”
“Would it help things it I told you I had the top mark in my class for my dissection projects?” Laverne gave a wide grin. “Small furry specimens tremble in my presence. So does Bernard.”
“Really, now? That does change things.” Syd flashed a large grin that rivaled Laverne's as they down the stairs to the parking lot. Maybe they did have something in common after all.

The Maniac Mansion series belongs to LucasArts (but they don't deserve them), was created by Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick and later lovingly expanded by Dave Grossman and Tim Schafer.
