Dead fandoms and such

I was at LUM today and dragged out a pile of MST3K tapes. We ended up watching the movie and most of the first shorts collection. There's one kid at the club who's only in grade 9 and never heard of the series before. So, I tried to explain it and very quickly he got totally into it. He couldn't stop laughing throughout the whole movie and tried making some misfired riffs of his own. And it made me sad.

Why? I had to explain that MST3K was cancelled back in 1999 and it's a mostly dead fandom. Gee, that kid was probably only 9 when the series ended. MST3K is actually older than he is. It's wonderful to find something you like, but to discover that there's no future for it has got to hurt.

Speaking of which, what was this about Subreality being dead? I know that a few TTPCTS writers have moved on, but I sure that Steff, Amanda and myself were still in the game and there were a few young writers planning on moving in... so... blah.

There are some corners of fandom I consider DEAD. One of which was the PoGLA - The Prisoners of Gravity Liberation Army. The PoGLA was a bunch of people on the old Signal Loss message board that were big time Prisoners of Gravity fans who planned on breaking into TVOntario HQ and stealing the PoG mater tapes. It was founded by Jesse and there were some other members, but I forget them. Anyway, after a while I hit a nasty wall of depression and everything kinda fell through.

I found some old PoGLA related emails from before the... badness came.

"Tommorow Headline: PoGLA DECLARES WAR ON TVO: "Give us PoG or we'll regime change yer asses! "

Not when you can lead a mob of people under the PoGLA
banner. We could pretend to float about in ZEROgee and
have a PoG-in on the corner of Younge and Bloor.

After consulting NanCY and the entire membership of
TPCTFPoGEps (The Provisional Committee to Free PoG
Episodes) for several hours, it was our decision to
affirm your new membership status APPROVED. Forthwith
you may now consider yourself Vice-Chairevolutionary
of the Propaganda Comittee of the PoGLA. Stationery
and a corner office with a nice view to follow.

LOL! I miss Jesse. He was completely insane, but fun to talk to. He reminded me a lot of Jody.
